NORTH CAROLINA - Democratic superdelegates

U.S. House of Representatives Members:

Rep. G.K. Butterfield, 1st Congressional District - Obama

Rep. Bob Etheridge, 2nd Congressional District

Rep. Mike McIntyre, 7th Congressional District

Rep. Brad Miller, 13th Congressional District - Obama (Endorsed 5/8/08)

Rep. David Price, 4th Congressional District - Obama (Endorsed 4/16/08)

"The fact is that the unpledged delegate group (superdelegates) was added not to be kingmakers or queenmakers but simply to give each state a few extra slots without having to sign in blood for a presidential candidate or run against their own constituents," he said. "I don’t think anyone thought this would be the decisive voting bloc, let alone overturn a popular verdict." - Rep. David Price, quoted in the New York Times ("Superdelegate Stalemate Shows No Sign of Easing," 4-26-08.

Rep. Heath Shuler, 11th Congressional District - Clinton (Endorsed 5/7/08)

Nat'l Democratic Municipal Officials Conference:

Joyce Brayboy - Obama (Endorsed 3/10/08)

Jeanette Council, Vice Chair, Cumberland County Board of Commissioners - Obama (Endorsed 5/7/08)

Muriel K. Offerman, Deputy Chair, N.C. Employment Security Commission - Obama (Endorsed 6/3/08)

David Parker - Obama (Endorsed 6/3/08)

"Parker, a Statesville attorney and a Democratic committee member, said he is trying to determine whether Clinton or Obama would most help Democratic candidates in North Carolina for offices such as governor and and U.S. Senator. That is one reason, Parker said, that superdelegates were selected -- to look dispassionately at what would be the best for the party. But Parker is undecided. "My mind is with Hillary," Parker said. "My heart is with Obama, and my gut has not kicked in yet. I don't know." - N&O, 2-16-08
Carol Peterson, Buncombe County Commissioner
E-mail: peterson7@bellsouth.net

"Meantime, Buncombe County commissioner Carol Peterson, after listening to Clinton's speech from South Dakota in which she declined to concede the race, said she'd like to hold her endorsement until the party can conclude discussions about disputed delegates in Florida and Michigan."There are still some things out there, and I feel like everyone needs to be heard," Peterson said." - N&O, Under The Dome, 6-3-08
Everett Ward - Obama

Most of North Carolina's superdelegates had pledged support and/or endorsed John Edwards. Some may be waiting to see who Edwards endorses, but more likely are waiting until it gets closer to the date of the NC primary (May 6). Following Edwards's exit from the race, Obama is currently leading in the polls here, 50% to Clinton's 40. It seems probable that most of NC's superdelegates will end up in the Obama column.

I have been to three counties so far and I've talked with only 2 out of 50 people voting for Clinton. Let's all hope this trend keeps going Obama's way. Vote, Just Vote please.

Obama also needs popular votes. Is there an organized effort to increase his popular vote on May 6? If not, can we put a plan in place?

Hi Peter,

Thanks for writing. Just a reminder, this site is not part of the Obama campaign, or affiliated with Obama for America. We are an independent, volunteer coalition of voters supporting Obama.

That said, news reports say the Obama campaign will be opening offices in North Carolina very soon. Until then, to find out more about the Obama campaign in NC, or to network with other local Obama supporters, we encourage you to join the "NC for Obama" listserve through my.barackobama.com. In the Triangle, there are volunteer groups like Triangle for Obama and Durham for Obama.

These groups are doing traditional GOTV work like registering voters, canvassing and phonebanking. Which is all very important to an Obama victory in NC on May 6. We're registering some voters, too, while gathering signatures for petitions to NC superdelegates.

But our focus is on superdelegates because they're likely going to decide the race. And it's something that almost no one else in NC is organizing around. Our sole mission is to give voters the tools they need to ask superdelegates to support Barack.

Although we're based in NC, and organized our first petition drives to superdelegates here, we set up www.votersforobama.com to encourage voters elsewhere to do the same. Already, the site has helped spark petition drives to superdelegates in three other states.

I wrote Price

He responded that he was waiting before making a decision.

He also took exception to the term SuperDelegate.

At the Democratic Party's local precinct meetings earlier this month, I proposed resolutions in two Orange County precincts calling for our N.C. superdelegates to support Obama. Both passed by unanimous consent, and advanced to the county level.
